Many times the primary medical insurance in your home country will not cover you while traveling abroad and often will not provide important services, perhaps essential ones, in the event of an illness or injury. Thus the reason US and EU / European and other world consulates require non residents entering their country legally to possess an approved form of medical insurance. Most consulates will not even approve a visa for entry unless the applicant shows a certified letter of medical coverage which offers a minimum coverage amount, low deductible option and providing coverge for 1) medical and hospitalization, 2) emergency medical evacuation back to home country and 3) repatriation of remains coverage to home country. Only visa medical insurance plans we offer come certified with the necessary limits of coverage when applying for Schengen visa for visiting the European Union.

In the 1980's, seven European countries signed the Schengen Agreement. This enabled the removal of internal border controls between the Schengen member states, therefore allowing easy movement within the defined locations of member countries. It also streamlined communication, thus making it so much easier for tourists, students or travelers on business to visit multiple European countries for a period of less than three months.
As of 2019, there are 26 member countries refered to as the Schengen area, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Traveling throughout the EU has definitely become easier, thanks to the introduction of the Schengen visa.
